I remember my high school prom like it was yesterday. It was all smiles full of youthful happiness, tears of sadness to be leaving school and entering the REAL world, but most of all dress shopping mayhem!
I was soooooo fussy about the style of dress I wanted. The colour had to match my boyfriend at the times outfit (it was only going to be cool if we had a matching colour scheme). Then it had to get my mum’s approval on length, exposure and of course, the cost.
We went to more prom dress shops than you can count on four hands, but eventually I found ‘THE ONE’. It was baby pink (very stereotypical – high school chic) and it didn’t expose too much boob or leg. You have to get the balance right. This was the hardest part when I was shopping for my dress. It needed to be the right size and fit for my body type. You can search high and low, far and wide but until you find a shop that sells prom dresses for your body type, you will just keep on hunting them down.
I found that looking online for inspiration was quite helpful too. I flicked through magazines upon magazines, and got lots of paper cuts in the process. I eventually found the colour I wanted by looking through wedding photo sharing posts, and I was sold on the baby pink (which was all the rage during my prom years…many moons ago).
Here are some top tips on finding a dress that will suit your body shape:
Apple Shaped – a full ball gown or a-line dress gives your body a real beautiful outline. A lower V-shaped neckline will also elongate the upper half of your body.
Pear Shaped – a dress that emphasises your curves, so something with a tighter bodice than the rest of the dress. Emphasise the beautiful curves of your body with ruffles or floral prints.
Hourglass – make the most of that waist by wearing something quite fitted. To really show-off ensure that you wear a V-shaped neckline to elongate that stunning silhouette.
Petite – you will want to give yourself some height, so buy a dress that shows off your legs. A 1950s prom dress search may just help you find that special something something.

The prom itself was an amazing experience and full of dancing, not having a care in the world and enjoying seeing good friends one last time. I haven’t kept in touch with the majority of the people I celebrated with that night, but I do see little updates via Facebook and love seeing people getting married, having babies or succeeding in their careers.
