I went to see a psychic nearly 10 years ago now, and one of the only things that resonated with me that she said was…
“Don’t ever buy a home that is dark, shadowed by lots of trees or makes you feel caved in”
I didn’t realise at the time what she was referring to, but now I look back and realise…this had everything to do with my mental health.
I absolutely hate the dark. I’m not scared of the dark, but it does leave me feeling quite blue and down in the dumps. The dark/the evening is the time of the day when all my stresses, concerns and worries like to crop up out of nowhere and become my own worst enemy. I can’t switch off as easily as I do in the daytime. During the day time, we are often out and bout, busy working, looking after children and running the household that we don’t stop and think. When the evening comes this is when the thoughts start to creep…
When myself and my partner were shopping around for our first home together, the one thing I was overly interested in was the light, the windows and just how much space I was going to get from the main living areas of the house.
The house we now call home is perfect. It has lots of windows, white shiny walls and even the bedroom has two gorgeous sky double glazed windows that allow lots of morning and evening sunshine through. To some people this may sound ridiculously unimportant, but to me it really resonated on my happiness for the future, my living and my overall wellbeing.
Another thing that immediately showcased just how light and airy our home was going to be was our big rectangular doors and windows in the front room. They were a sure sign to me that the house was never going to leave me feeling ‘boxed in’ or sat in a dark, gloomy home.

When it came down to the decorating, it was a matter of keeping the home as light as possible. I am not a lover of dark colours within an interior design anyways, so we decided to stick to white walls, grey decorative bits and the odd dash of colour here and there. The white walls do mean we have to ‘touch them up’ regularly as we have a 1 year old that likes to play with bright red lipsticks on the walls, put chocolate mittens all over the skirting boards and a cat that likes to claw at the doors. It’s a lose lose situation for us, but I wouldn’t have it any other way.
So when you are looking for a new home or even when you’re job hunting. Make sure you are checking out just how light, airy and spacious the environment is before you commit to somewhere that could potentially leave you feeling down in the dumps.
