Band of Gold absolutely captivated audiences in the 90s with over 15 million viewers tuning into the TV programme each week. The murderous thriller surrounds a group of women – Carol, Rose, Anita and Gina, and follows their individual stories on the red light district.
The first thing that appealed to me was the star studded cast of award winning actors including Gaynor Faye (Emmerdale, Playing the Field, Calendar Girls), Laurie Brett (EastEnders, Waterloo Road, Les Miserables), Kieron Richardson (Hollyoaks, Heartbeat), Shayne Ward (Coronation Street, Rock of Ages, X Factor winner) and Sacha Parkinson (Mr. Selfridge, The Mill).
Writer-Director Kay Mellor, is one of the UK’s most successful and revered dramatists, and has penned the likes of Playing the Field, The Syndicate and Girlfriends, but most popularly was her much-loved and watched show – Fat Friends. Kay also adapted Fat Friends into a stage musical in 2017, and it was hugely popular amongst its female fanatic audience.
So 25 years later from Band Of Gold’s series finale on TV, and the show has now hit the stage. It brings a brand new cast together, and is most definitely the sequel we have all been waiting for!
Kay successfully keeps a high tension throughout the show, and the effective moveable set transports the action in a way that is easy to follow. The show has an extremely strong acting cast, and this is clear to see as soon as one of them or all of them are on stage together. The performances are believable and full of strong emotional tugs. Laurie Brett and Sacha Parkinson were absolutely fantastic on stage, and stole the set for me.
If you’re a fan of the show or you were in the 90s, then this one is for you. If you haven’t seen the show but love ITV dramas, thrillers and high tension documentaries, then this is a MUST.
It’s a five out of five for me!
