Ever since you were a little child, you’ve been told that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Is there any truth behind this, or is it one of those classic things parents tell kids to get them to eat their food?
Well, you’ll be pleased to know your parents weren’t lying about this one! Though, whether or not they actually knew why breakfast was the most important meal of the day is up for debate. Regardless, why is breakfast so crucial?
Provides some much-needed energy
Breakfast is essential as it provides you with an energy boost to start the day. If you constantly skip your first meal of the day, you’re already running on low energy. A cup of coffee may give you an initial jolt, but the slow release of energy from a good breakfast will help you feel more alive and focused.
Improves your mental capacity
Following on from above, breakfast can genuinely improve your mental capacity and help you focus more. This is because it restores glucose levels, which help the brain to function. You will find it easier to concentrate and be productive, and there’s even evidence that eating breakfast will improve your mood and help you feel happier.
Helps you lose weight
Yes, breakfast can be essential when it comes to weight loss. Ironically, many people skip this meal when looking to lose weight. They see it as unnecessary calories, which is so incredibly wrong. Instead, eating breakfast will improve your blood sugar levels, preventing cravings before lunch. In essence, you can stay fuller for longer, avoiding the need to snack on sugary things to give you an energy boost. By eating breakfast, you prevent the need to eat anything else until it’s time for lunch!
What are the golden rules of breakfast?
You can see why breakfast is so important, but what are the rules you should follow regarding it?
Firstly, many top health coaches and nutritionists will work with clients to set targets and goals, and one of the main targets is to eat breakfast every day. Don’t skip it, and you should be able to understand why this is the case from the previous three points! Secondly, eating within 2 hours of waking up is seen as the best approach to breakfast. Any longer than this, and it’s technically not considered breakfast anymore.
Finally, when it comes to what you should eat for breakfast, a slow release of carbs is always preferred. Eating things like porridge or oats are great as they can fill you up and give you energy for hours after. Avoid sugary things for breakfast as they simply won’t provide any benefits.
This post should’ve answered the question: why is breakfast the most important meal of the day? It gives you energy, improves your mental functionality, and can help you lose weight. Feel free to follow some of the golden rules spoken about above as well, they will help you eat better breakfasts to see all the benefits.
