The internet has changed the way we shop. Thanks to shopping sites such as Amazon, eBay, Etsy, and the huge number of niche online retailers, we can pretty much get anything we want or need. Here’s four reasons to think twice before shopping online….

It’s easy to focus on the benefits. We can shop without leaving our armchairs. We can save money on products thanks to the ease of comparison shopping. And we can save in other ways, such as when buying the medication we need, as this is one way to cut out dispensing fees.
So, why should we think twice before shopping online? As it can be convenient and cost-effective, surely there is nothing wrong with this. Well, we aren’t suggesting you should rule out online shopping entirely but it is still important to consider some of the disadvantages. By doing so, you may have reason to think twice before you make your next online purchase.
#1: There is the risk of fraud
Some online retailers have systems in place to protect their customers. But when you visit websites that aren’t secure or that may not be particularly reputable, you may fall prey to an online scam. Products you order may never arrive. Hackers could steal your banking details. And you may be sent a counterfeit product that isn’t safe to use. To protect yourself from these scams you should choose the sites you use carefully. You should look for online reviews too. Or you could simply shop on your local high street as this is often the safest thing to do. That leads us to our next point.
#2: The high street is dying
Have you taken a stroll along your local high street recently? If so, you may have noticed the large number of stores that are now empty. Businesses both large and small have gone under in recent years, and this is partly because of people who prefer to do their shopping online. If you have ever complained about the lack of stores in your area, consider the notion that you may be partly to blame. Do your local retailers a favour and spend more of your money at their stores.
#3: The planet is under threat
Online deliveries are great but there can be effects on the environment. We are thinking of the packaging that some companies use, for example, a lot of which can be wasteful and unrecyclable. We are also thinking of the exhaust smoke pumped out by delivery vans which adds to the pollution in the atmosphere. Of course, some online retailers are greener than others, so these should be your go-to if shopping online. Alternatively, shop locally as this is often the greener thing to do, especially if you leave your car at home.
#4: You might overspend
Your goal should always be to save money rather than waste it. But when shopping online, many of us do waste money as it’s very easy to put items in our virtual shopping baskets. It only takes a couple of clicks to buy something and unless we cancel quickly, money will soon disappear from our accounts. Many people get into debt when online shopping so this is something to consider for yourself. While it is possible to make savings online, as we suggested at the beginning, it is also possible to get into financial jeopardy. Think carefully before you click that ‘buy now’ button on your screen!
Online shopping isn’t evil. There are times when it can be useful. However, we shouldn’t spend all of our time and money online and this is because of the reasons we have discussed here. Think twice then and consider other ways to shop outside of your laptop and mobile devices.
