Silently poignant – sometimes words are not needed…
AD – Please note I was invited to attend this production to review, but my thoughts are 100% honest.
Another brilliant production from Matthew Bourne, whom is famous for his dance adaptations of some of the most well known stories of our time. This particular one is a take on Tim Burton’s 1999 film ‘Edward Scissorhands’ and has been selling-out theatres across the globe since 2005.

For those of you that don’t know the story, young Edward dies after being tragically struck by lightening whilst playing with a pair of scissors (and I’m pretty sure that makes a whole lot of sense considering his famous hands). His bereaved father is struggling with his grief, so decides to build a new son. He doesn’t get to finish building his son, when he suffers with a heart attack when his laboratory is being broken into. So the newly built Edward is left with Scissors for hands – and goes it alone to find refuge with a housewife called Peg Boggs. We watch Edward’s journey of discovery, winning over the townsfolk, in particular the heart of Peg’s daughter Kim, and also the cruel and jealous human nature of society around him.
The adaptation on stage is visually beautiful, and completely captures the gothic nature of Tim Burton’s tale and Hope Springs is completely enchanting to behold on stage. Stephen Murray who plays Edward Scissorhands is pure perfection and I’m sure the whole audience fell in love with him as soon as he entered the stage. You can almost feel his fear, bewilderment, and yearning for love throughout the production.

The composer, Terry Davies’ puts on one hell of a musical masterpiece that is going to be hard to forget, and is possibly one of the best composed shows I have ever seen.
Matthew Bourne’s Edward Scissorhands is one of the most magically composed productions I have ever seen, and the production throughout is something to behold. I strongly recommend a visit if you love theatre. Running at Milton Keynes Theatre until 3rd February – get tickets now.
