How to Update Your Bedroom for the Autumn Season

Autumn is coming, and I cannot wait!

I am a HUGE lover of the seasons here in the UK, whether it be the darker, colder evenings, roasting marshmallows around a fire, or simply getting snug in a thicker duvet during those dark nights (preferably with Great British Bake Off on my TV). I’ve put together some top tips on how you can update your bedroom ahead of the Autumn season, and make the most of the weather changes. I know a lot of people suffer from seasonal affective disorder and you can help keep those feelings at bay by making your home your safe, warm, enjoyable haven.

How to Update Your Bedroom for the Autumn Season

Fresh Bed Linen

Every season I like to treat myself to brand new bedding, and in Autumn – the summer duvet gets put away for the following spring, and my thicker, warmer and more snug duvet comes back out to play.

Your bed is an extremely important part of your bedroom – if not, the MOST important part of your bedroom. It is crucial that you make your bed comfortable, clean and a place in your home that you can’t wait to climb into at the end of a long day.

Buy yourself some fresh bed linen, and change your duvet to a tog heavier.

Lighting

Another extremely important part of your home – lighting!

The lighting in your bedroom can help you with your sleep, your focus (I’m a passionate bed reader, so like to have a light suitable for this) and an ambience for other activities…

I tend to change my white bulbs back to yellow at this time of year, and it does definitely help to create more of an autumnal atmosphere shift.

Colours

When it comes to autumnal colour schemes, be inspired by A/W fashion, Carrie Bradshaw and New York (yes, the place).

Heritage tweed, herringbones with plaids and thick, chunky knit is the epitomy of autumnal materials. The colour palettes tend to be oranges, browns, greens and blues. It tends to a darker tone than the summery season previous, and I believe this is to go hand-in-hand with your mood changes during the season.

Avoiding bright colours like reds, yellows and pinks is key during this season as it makes you automatically think of the other seasons Winter, Spring and Summer. Focus on the present, live in the moment and ensure your bedroom reflects your season.

Autumn Decor

Pop some autumnal decor in your bedroom to help you embrace the season. Things like orange/brown cushions, vases with feathers inside or even just some new little photo frames or candles.

I’ve recently purchased things like:

• LED automatic battery operated candles – these super cute candles come on automatically, and don’t contain any fire hazards if you fall asleep
• Faux flowers and feathers in a vase – I purchased some fragranced faux flowers and feathers in brown and orange tones, and they have definitely helped to make my room feel a bit more autumnal
• Fake felt pumpkin – I’ve scattered some of these coloured felt pumpkins around the home, including in my decorative large bowls in my bedroom and dining room.
• An acorn door stop – it’s just too cute – spotted this in Dunelm.
• Not bedroom related but I always change my door wreath and door mat depending on the season. Nice for guests and for when you arrive home after a long day too.

Fragrances

I like to change my scent of my home at Autumn time. We go from fresh linen and lemon and lime scents from summer to cinnamon and earthy outdoor scents.

Some of my all-time favourite autumnal scents are:

• Cedarwood
• Wild Fig
• Spiced Pumpkin
• Sandalwood
• Apple
• Cinnamon
• Nutmeg

Pop a new diffuser in your room, or light a candle at night to create a heavenly scent in your sacred room.

So whether it’s sweet-smelling candles or a nice furry blanket to place at the end of your bed – your warming autumn decorations will ensure that it lifts your mood (especially those who struggle with seasonal depression) and make you feel all the autumn vibes we desire.
