When Silence Becomes Strength by Rehab R. Adil
There are some books that tell their story through huge, dramatic moments, and then there are those that find meaning in the quieter parts of life. When Silence Becomes Strength by Rehab R. Adil very much falls into the latter category.
The novel follows 18-year-old Zara Hassan as she leaves behind her home and family in Dubai to study architecture in London. She arrives expecting independence, opportunity and excitement, but quickly discovers that creating a new life for yourself can be incredibly lonely.
What struck me most about Zara’s story was how relatable that contrast felt. We often talk about moving away, going to university or starting somewhere new as exciting milestones, but rarely acknowledge that you can be incredibly grateful for an opportunity while simultaneously desperately missing everything you’ve left behind.
Zara finds herself living in an unfamiliar household that never quite feels like home, while watching life continue back in Dubai without her. Over the following years, she quietly carries her homesickness, isolation and emotional struggles, often telling those around her that she’s fine when the reality underneath is very different.
There is something particularly powerful about the fact that Zara’s resilience isn’t portrayed through one enormous moment of triumph. Instead, it appears in the everyday act of simply carrying on.
She studies. She adapts. She misses home. She struggles. She questions herself. And she keeps going.
Faith also plays an important role throughout the story, becoming something Zara can return to as she navigates uncertainty and begins to understand herself and her own strength.
At just 137 pages, this isn’t a long novel, but it deals with some big themes: displacement, family, identity, loneliness, faith and what it really means to be resilient.
I also loved the underlying question at the heart of the book: when does silence become strength?
Because strength doesn’t always have to be loud or obvious. Sometimes, the battles people are fighting are completely invisible to everyone around them.

When Silence Becomes Strength is a gentle and reflective read rather than a fast-paced one, and I think that’s exactly the point. Rehab R. Adil gives space to the moments we can so easily overlook and reminds us that simply continuing to put one foot in front of the other can sometimes be an act of courage in itself.
A thoughtful read for anyone who has ever had to find their feet somewhere new — or discovered a strength within themselves that nobody else could see.
