I don’t do many informative editorials for fellow bloggers, but I felt that this topic was crucial and something that I struggled with when I first got into blogging myself.
The choice of a font can be sooooo important, and it is what makes your blog readable, friendly and almost approachable. Think about a font the way you look at somebody for the very first time. You can often judge somebody, misread somebody or think that they look unapproachable. This is the way a blog can appear due to a bad font choice. If you choose a font that is difficult to read then most readers will simply press the small X at the top right of the page. That is not what we are trying to achieve when writing these posts!
Having a blog is quite the craft. You have to ensure it’s up-to-date, visually effective and reads well, so why do we choose to put such pressure on ourselves? Well it’s because we love the craft, enjoy writing and talking to an audience that are engaged with what we have to say. I also love the fact that I can get creative, arty and lose myself from the design possibilities that a computer can offer you. It seems so silly to say I am in love with a rounded font, but sometimes that is the case!
You don’t have to use the everyday font on your blog, in your logos or on your social media channels. So jazz it up and make your blog stand out from all the millions that exist with a Design Bundles
Here are some examples of what I have been practicing with to emphasise my design abilities as well as being recognised as a writer:
Playing around on your computer with different fonts and design bundles is like a bit of ‘me time’. When my daughter Belle goes down for a midday nap, sometimes I just get all excited by the design concepts and sit for an hour creating new and exciting images and content that I can share at a later date. It isn’t always super impressive visuals, but sometimes simple and serene images like the one created above. It just makes it a nice easy way of sharing and showcasing some of your design work across social media too.
So as you can see, the font choice is crucial for branding as well as readership. It can make people absolutely despise your blog from just one glance or fall in love at an instance. I’ve had people message me and ask ‘OMG I absolutely love the font, forget the background and the content of the piece – what is that font?’. It doesn’t offend me at all, because if I can get something right then that is good enough for me.
