Pets are a huge part of our lives. They’re a valuable member of the family and offer so much. They connect with us, show us they love us, and provide so much emotional support. When we lose a pet, we lose a part of ourselves, so here are 3 comforting ways to cope with the loss of a pet.
Please note this is a collaboration post.
It’s important to respect the grieving process with a pet just as you would with anyone else. People struggle with loss in their way and some find it harder than others to cope.
Where a person is in their grieving process will affect how they are currently coping. And because everyone does it differently, there’s no way of knowing how people will react.
Understanding Grief
Grief happens in five stages. Not everyone goes through all five stages nor do they always happen in this order. But understanding the stages of grief will adjust how you can cope with grief and how to help someone else through it.
Talking
Don’t underestimate the power of talking. Talking through different emotions can help you get an idea of where everyone is, including yourself, in the grieving process. You can uncover some things that you may not realize are there and find a connection with others in the shared grief.

Here are three ways to deal with the loss of a pet.
3 Comforting ways to deal with the loss of a pet – Routine:
Routine is something that we can rely on. When something like the loss of a pet happens, it’s easy for everything to come to a halt while you sort through your emotions. If there are children in the home, everything will likely seem up in the air for them.
Loss is confusing for everyone and this will probably be the first time they encounter these emotions. Routine is a great way of keeping everyone on track so nothing derails too far.
3 Comforting ways to deal with the loss of a pet – Share Stories:
Share stories about your favorite memories with your pet. How they made you happy, the things you did with them, and their personality quirks that showed you how they were. Every animal has their unique things that make us happy.
There’s something therapeutic about sharing stories about someone you love as a way of processing how they made you feel and how the loss has affected you. During this time, it’s okay to laugh, cry and experience the full range of emotions.
3 Comforting ways to deal with the loss of a pet – Commemorate Them:
Just like donating a bench or a plaque can help with the grieving of a person, commemorating a pet can help with the grieving process, too. Urns for pets are a popular way of commemorating them or having your favorite picture of them printed on canvas. Other ways of commemoration include portrait paintings, making a scrapbook of your favorite pictures and stories, and having a memorial service.
The Takeaway.
Whilst some methods of grieving may seem a little extravagant for some, others might hit the nail on the head for you and your family.
It’s important to assess the situation and get a little perspective on where everyone is in their grieving process before suggesting ways to cope.
