Child custody agreements are a great way of providing both parents adequate time with their children. That doesn’t mean that they’re easy to reach. In fact, in many cases, reaching an agreement can be a heart-wrenching process.
Please note – this is a collaboration post which is not written by myself.
Because the process is so stressful and emotional, you may find that your mental health takes a knock. The best way to prepare for everything this process has to throw at you is to adopt the following tips.
Talk About It
Not to just anyone, of course. Talking about the process of a child custody agreement should only be done with a counselor, therapist, or those you know well and trust. It can help to air your feelings and work through some of your thoughts before they become too overwhelming.
There may be times when you become scared at the thought of the future or angry at the other parent for telling your children too much about divorce. You may be tempted to act spontaneously but anything negative that you say or do during a child custody battle could go against you.
Keep A Record
One of the best ways to avoid getting angry at the current situation is to keep a record of events. At this time, everything you do and say will be scrutinized but so will the other parent. Write down anything that shows the other parent in a bad light and report it to your family lawyers.
All interactions and behaviors are worth noting so you have the evidence you need to get the custody that you want. Avoid posting on social media during this time so nothing can be used against you.
Give Yourself a Break
A custody battle is grueling and tedious. It’s important to look after yourself when you go through a process like this. Although your children will need your reassurance, you also need to find some time for yourself.
Make sure that you sleep well, eat well, and get some exercise when you have the energy. This will all help to improve your overall health but can also work to improve your mood when you need a pick me up.
Keep Communicating
One of the things that can make a custody battle easier on both parties is if you communicate well with each other. If you can keep the lines of communication open with the other parent, it will help you both to co-parent and help the children to feel more secure during the process.
Remember that although you’re both battling to spend time with your children, your children are what’s most important in this scenario. They want to see their parents fighting as little as possible.
Stay Focused On Your Children
You don’t want to be fighting so hard for custody that you lose sight of your children. You may miss what your children are going through because you’re so wrapped up in the case. Listen to how your children are feeling and validate their feelings with reassurance.
