As we are focusing on all things Dementia this week, I have spoken to Jon Stanley COO of CHD Living regarding how to make cared living a home – a care home that really does what it says.
At CHD Living, the passion is on comfort, homely settings and quality of life for all residents. The centres offer an atmosphere similar to a hotel and a team of attentive staff that are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to cater to residents every need. The staff are skilled and efficient in everything they do and that’s why I had to speak to Jon about how they make a difference in the dementia community.
Q: Hi Jon, it’s a pleasure to speak to you regarding the care you and the team at CHD Living offer those with dementia. So to begin where does your passion come from and what was it that made you want to help those suffering with dementia?
My passion for working with people living with dementia comes from having a ‘why not’ approach to supporting people. For many people, a diagnosis of dementia is devastating. It is important to me that people living with dementia continue to do so to the fullest and in as normal a way as possible. The knowledge that you are able to provide that for someone, as well as their family and friends, is second to none.
Q: Why should someone choose your care homes to look after their loved one dealing with dementia?
Our care homes offer a lifestyle which focuses on happiness and safety, combined with compassionate person-centred care, promoting our people’s choices, dignity and privacy. Our teams specialise in caring, engaging and communicating with people living with dementia, particularly those who may show distressed behaviours. Quality of life is essential to everyone as dementia comes with its challenges. It affects relationships, daily living, memory, cognitive functions and physical and verbal communication and so also impacts on everyone around them. We strive to ensure that quality of life is maintained and improved and that our care and support positively impacts the lives of our residents and their loved ones.
Q: What makes your care homes different?
Our dementia care homes boast vibrant dementia-friendly environments, a diverse group of residents and care team, which all contributes to a bubbly and homely atmosphere with a real sense of family. The homes are spontaneous, free spirited, full of life, love and laughter and bring lots of joyful moments to remember.In the midst of it all, our services remain fully focused on ensuring our homes are well led, effectively run, responsive, caring and safe.
We have developed our Dementia Strategy through our 39 year care service journey, which makes us unique in our approach as it is unique to the people we support. This touches on inclusion, having an open door policy, dementia friendly environments, meaningful and innovative activities and an occupation program which is tailored to suit people’s needs and wishes. Staff development includes in-depth training for staff in a number of different formats, upskilling staff to coach each other and the implementation of meaningful care practices which have positively impacted lives, for example, Person Centred Positive Behavioural Support Plans. These plans are developed by the whole team based on their knowledge and understanding of the people they are supporting.
Our services have absolute focus on supporting people to be as independent as they can and helping people to take positive steps to lead a home from home life.
