I went to University in the cobbling town of Northampton, so the fact that Kinky Boots looks into the tale of a failing shoe factory based in the town immediately excites me, plus who doesn’t love shoes shoes shoes?!
So mix Lola the drag performer with a political edge, and what do you get…Kinky Boots. The theatrical show was written by Geoff Deane and Tim Firth inspired by the 2005 film. I went into this show 100% blindfolded as I haven’t seen the stage show or movie before, but I was in for one hell of a night…
The story unveils that Charlie’s father passed away so he inherits the shoe factory in Northampton, Price & Son. Charlie isn’t too sure what he is doing and the business is failing, but a chance encounter whilst in London with a drag act called Lola changes the pathway of everything. The business goes from producing brogues to thigh high glitz and glamour, the world is about to change and the show certainly does too when Lola hits the stage.
So Charlie is in London as his business is failing, so he goes to meet his fiancé in the bright city. He happens to bump into Lola who has broken the heel on her stiletto, and when Charlie offers to help fix it the conversation gets flowing. They come up with a business venture and that’s when Charlie’s company worries vanish. The show certainly transforms and Lola sparkles!
Kayi Ushe is out of this world, and quite possibly the best stage presence I have ever witnessed. I couldn’t help but completely zone out when the song Hold Me In Your Heart was sang – and I mean zone out and forget where I was because the voice was so overwhelmingly powerful. The jokes throughout where brilliant, and I was a whole load of emotions – happy, sad and completely besotted by Lola of course.
I have to say ALL the production team were incredible, but another person who deserves a HUGE mention and applause is Joel Harper-Jackson who played Charlie. His vocal range was unbelievable and he oozed a lot of sympathy from myself throughout, but I was rooting for him from the start.
The pop music throughout is based on the book by Harvey Fierstein and the music and lyrics by Cyndi Lauper. It had the whole audience rocking, rolling and clapping along. The whole room felt like it was bursting with all types of emotions.
Kinky Boots is without a doubt one of my absolute favourites shows I have ever seen on the big stage. I can not recommend the glamour, the glitz, the vocals and just the excitement of the story enough to anyone. So book your tickets for the Kinky Boots tour at Milton Keynes Theatre now.
